Stats Canada identifies first-generation individuals as “people who were born outside Canada,” but in the context of We Rep STEM (and in academia) “first-generation” or “first-gen” typically refers to a student who is the first in their family (not including siblings) to attend a post-secondary institute such as a college, university, or apprenticeship program, according to Seneca College.

On social media, some graduates refer to themselves as “first-gen” if they are the first in their family to earn a graduate degree.
